the Theatre of Silence experience, an eagerly-awaited event all over the world. As for the surprises and celebrities attending this philanthropic event, I cannot name any names yet, but there are going to be a lot of them, as usual. Speaking of Lajatico, what is your advice to visitors? My advice is to get lost, taking one’s time and with curiosity, amidst the hills, so full of simple and genuine beauty. The Valdera countryside offers visitors genuine, authentic and vital amazement…. The sound of the tractors mingles with the rustling of the trees and, in my opinion, visitors can have a taste of the peasant culture and values that are so deeply rooted in this land’s children, including me.

Andrea Bocelli is also a passionate wine producer, along with his brother Alberto, on the family-owned estate. Their signature wine is a 100% Sangiovese label made from the oldest vineyards What is the program of the next Theatre of Silence event, in July? The event will revolve around opera music and spectacular performances. The title we chose is Ali di libertà, like one of the songs from my latest album “Sì”. Inspired by this year’s Leonardo da Vinci celebrations, the performances will be a celebration of flight and of the desire to break boundaries (on July 25 and 27, editor’s note.). osimo I and Caterina, both members of the Medici family born in Florence in the same year, 1519. An eclectic sovereign and first Great Duke of Florence, the former, Queen of France the latter. Did you know that we all owe something to both of these illustrious relatives: each time you lift a fork to your mouth, there is something of Caterina de’ Medici in that action, and when you marvel in front of Europe’s finest palaces, in each one of them there is something of Palazzo Pitti and Cosimo I who, when he moved the Medici residence from Via Larga to Oltrarno on the other side of the river, set the trend for palaces at the gates of the city, rather than in the centre, which was later to be followed by the great Courts of Europe. To Cosimo we owe the Uffizi,

We can thank Caterina who, despite being rather plain, was extremely refined and intelligent, for Couture, Bon Ton and Nouvelle Cuisine. So, 1519 was quite a blessed year, which Florence is now celebrating after 500 years with about 50 different events. First and foremost, three important exhibitions are to be staged at the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti, which pay a tribute to Cosimo I: ‘The Prince’s One Hundred Lances’ at the Uffizi Gallery, ‘The Tapestries in honour of Cosimo’ at Palazzo Pitti and ‘The Peasant and his Barrel Divertissements in the new garden’ (from 6 June to 29 September) at the Boboli Gardens.

he ingenious student – so ingenious that his name became a universal synonym for talent – pays tribute to his master, who was also a genius, but “limited” to the fields of painting, sculpture and goldsmithing. The 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), born in the hill town of Vinci, just a half hour’s drive from Florence, brings the talent and workshop of his master Andrea del Verrocchio, known more simply as Verrocchio (1435-1488), back to the spotlight.Verrocchio is the central figure of an exhibition curated by Francesco Caglioti and Andrea De Marchi, running until July 14 in Florence between Palazzo Strozzi (9 sections) and the Bargello (2 sections). It is the first-ever major retrospective dedicated to this key player in the Renaissance (after Florence, the show will move to the National Gallery in Washington D.C. from September 29 to February 2). An emblematic artist of the Renaissance, in his workshop on via de’ Macci Verrocchio educated an entire generation of masters – besides Leonardo, the circle included Perugino and Ghirlandaio, then the teachers of Raphael and Michelangelo. It was a workshop (today it’d likely be called an academy) where painting, sculpting, and working in terracotta, marble and bronze

Leonardo was born in 1452 in Anchiano, three kilometers from Vinci, and you can still visit his home. In Vinci you’ll find the Leonardo Museum, with the oldest collection of models of Leonardo’s work as an architect, scientist and engineer. all took place. Leonardo, who reluctantly left it on the cusp of thirty, learned drawing, melting and moulding there. His connection to Florence was strong, since he spent his first thirty years there: now, until June 24, the Sala dei Gigli in Palazzo Vecchio is hosting the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci in Florence. Selected Foglios from the Codex Atlanticus. Curated by the art historian Cristina Acidini, the exhibition features 12 sheets signed by Leonardo from the legendary Codex Atlanticus, on rare loan from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan, and aims to rediscover its many references to Leonardo’s place of origin, which he never forgot. “Even far from Florence,” Cristina Acidini explains, “Leonardo maintained strong ties to its institutions, such as Santa Maria Nuova Hospital, where he kept his money in addition to studying anatomy. And with the Medici, too, who always protected him. Lorenzo the Magnificent welcomed him into the sculpture garden in San Marco, where young, promising artists were trained. LEONARDO AND FLORENCE The exhibition in Palazzo Vecchio, on until June 24, celebrates the link between Leonardo and Florence. 12 of the 1119 signed sheets from the Codex Atlanticus were selected by Cristina Acidini based on their Florentine references.che contengono un riferimento a Firenze ‘Florentine’ vision of Leonardo, a visit to room 35 of the west wing of the Uffizi Gallery is a must; together with the Michelangelo and Raphael rooms, it was inaugurated less than a year ago. You’ll find works from his youth, created in his years apprenticing in Verrocchio’s workshops. On the left as you enter is the Baptism of Christ, carried out between 1475 and 1478, years in which the artist still worked with Verrocchio. The work is the fruit of a three-part collaboration: Verrocchio, Leonardo and a less-gifted pupil. The elegant angel in profile wearing Christ’s garments was painted by Leonardo; it was so sublime that a legend (and Vasari) both say Verrocchio felt crushed by Leonardo’s superiority and never painted again. On the front wall is the Annunciation, from the church of Monteoliveto. In the center you can admire the Adoration of the Magi, left incomplete when Leonardo left for Milan in 1482. The altarpiece is a wonderful collection of notes, giving us insight into Leonardo’s creative process. The new air of the room, with its soft light gently accenting the drapery of the angel that Verrocchio so envied, encourages you to linger a little longer in room 35.

L’opera è frutto di un lavoro a tre mani: Verrocchio, Leonardo e un allievo poco dotato. A Leonardo si deve l’elegantissimo angelo di profilo che regge la veste di Cristo, così sublime da far nascere la leggenda (riportata da Vasari) secondo cui Verrocchio, sopraffatto dalla superiorità di Leonardo, da lì in poi non dipinse mai più. Sulla parete di fronte,è esposta l’Annunciazione, proveniente dalla chiesa di Monteoliveto. Al centro della sala si ammira l’Adorazione dei Magi, lasciata incompiuta al momento in cui Leonardo partì per Milano nel 1482. La pala è una grandissima pagina di appunti, che ci rende testimoni del processo creativo di Leonardo stesso. The Summer Festival closes with the concert by former Police frontman Sting 5 on July 29. Also the Pistoia Blues Festival, in its 40th year, welcomes to its stage on Piazza del Duomo great names of music, such as Thirty Seconds To Mars on July 6 , and the festival’s closing concert by Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals 6 on July 10. The Versiliana Festival, in Marina di Pietrasanta, features the great Italo-American pianist and songwriter Peter Cincotti 7 on July 26. On July 6, Katia Ricciarelli 8 will open the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago which, this year, includes 6 operas by Puccini, from July 12 to August 24. Near San Quirico d’Orcia on a little hill overlooking the Via Cassia near “I Triboli”, you encounter some of the area’s famous cypress trees and further on along the gravel road between San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza there’s the Vitaleta Chapel. Bagno Vignoni Alto affords extraordinary views, although hardly anyone knows about the place as it’s eclipsed by Bagno Vignoni and its central square consisting of an ancient stone tank, steaming with thermal water. Art lovers would do well to visit the small church of Santa Flora e Lucilla in Torrita and see the two lunettes featuring Donatello’s Baptism of Christ.On the border with the Val d’Orcia, deviating from the via Cassia, we come across Montalcino, home to the world-famous wine, Brunello. Our advice is to visit the Fortezza, which on clear days offers all-round views as far as the eye can see. Plus, there’s a superb wine bar tucked into the stronghold. For unforgettable sunsets, head west of Montalcino along the road from the Fortezza to Madonna del Soccorso. Here you’ll find the centuries-old Sant’Antimo Monastery, a white mirage among the vineyards. Don’t miss Poggio alle Mura Castle, with its adjacent Glass Museum, owned by a winery. If you only have time to visit one winery, our tip is Biondi Santi because it’s where Brunello was invented.

La zona più bella per godersi un tramonto spettacolare è invece nella parte ovest di Montalcino, percorrendo il viale che va dalla Fortezza alla Madonna del Soccorso. Nei dintorni c’è l’antichissima abbazia di Sant’Antimo, un miraggio bianco in mezzo ai vigneti. Un altro indirizzo imperdibile, è il Castello di Poggio alle Mura con l’annesso Museo del vetro oggi proprietà di un’azienda vitivinicola. Per la visita in un’azienda vitivinicola vi consigliamo Biondi Santi, perché è quella che ha inventato il leggendario Brunello. 86

uscany has been known for its great red wines since time immemorial, but this has not always been the case. For most of the Middle Ages, Tuscany’s most prestigious wine was almost exclusively represented by Vernaccia di San Gimignano, which was also the very first DOC Italian wine to obtain this important designation as early as 1966. Another of Tuscany’s historic white winegrowing areas is Pomino, since the days of Cosimo III de’ Medici, although Chardonnay grapes were not grown there yet. In more recent years, new producers have been joining the winemaking scene, often small to medium-sized, independent of the wine appellations but known for introducing international varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, in suitable zones, following in-depth studies on the terroirs. Therefore, there are a number of top-quality wineries, based in Greve in Chianti, Pontassieve, Montecarlo and in the Maremma area (from Bolgheri to Capalbio), which produce excellent white wines. Instead, the most widely-grown white grape variety along the Coast and on the islands is Vermentino.

La Toscana, come riconosciuto da tempi immemorabili, è terra di grandi vini rossi, ma non è sempre stato così. Durante il Medioevo il vino di prestigio in Toscana si identificava proprio con un bianco, la Vernaccia di San Gimignano, che è stata, fra l’altro, la prima denominazione di origine controllata italiana a essere riconosciuta nel 1966. Un’altra zona storica per i bianchi toscani è quella di Pomino, già eletta come vocata dai tempi di Cosimo III de’ Medici, anche se all’epoca non era ancora presente lo Chardonnay. Negli ultimi anni si sono poi affacciate nuove realtà, spesso di dimensioni mediopiccole e slegate dalle denominazioni, che a seguito di studi approfonditi sui terroir hanno portano vitigni internazionali - Chardonnay e Pinot grigio - in zone ad essi congeniali. In questa dinamica si inseriscono eccellenze produttuive con sede da Greve in Chianti a Pontassieve, da Montecarlo alla Maremma (da Bolgheri a Capalbio). Lungo la Costa e sulle Isole il principe dei bianchi è invece il Vermentino. 95
